Still, I'll Know I Am Free

I have learned to remember
The sound of the river
For it's the sound of all that is free,
And there in that freedom,
A light shines so bright
Within the life...
Of the soul
Within me.

And I've learned to remember
The song of the cardinal
For it's the song that beauty has blessed--
Whose melodies fly
On the wings of the wind
To find a hurt soul to caress.

I have learned to remember
The sound of a train
Somewhere on distant tracks
Chugging along--
Fearless and strong
Too determined, too eager
To look back.

Yes, I've learned to remember
The scent in the air
When it's time for the roses to bloom
For it smells just like peace,
And I can release
My mind from the dungeon of gloom.

I have learned to remember
The bliss of the rain,
For it whispers its tune to me
Such a tune I can hear,
Play close to my ear
Love's sacred symphony.

I have learned to remember
The things in this life
That once, perhaps I passed by
For as wisdom grows
Life, yes, how it shows
That it's more
Than what's seen
With the eye.

As I walk through this life
One step at a time
Taking from it what I may
Spending my days
Learning its ways,
I have learned to walk and to pray.

And I tell you, My Friend
Of all of these things
I have learned to keep within me
For when I'm chained to this life
And they say there's no light,
Still, I'll know I am free.
