Serenity’s Soul

February 18, 2010

Dear Serenity’s Soul,

I have just received word that Landon is on his way. Our things are packed and we are ready to go. Even Mocha seems to be a bit excited, as if she really knows what is happening. I have waited for this for such a long time, and now it’s almost as if I am floating in something that’s just not real. I went into Stacey’s room to give her the gift I got for her. It was time to present her with something I felt was quite meaningful. She looked at me as I stood in front of her with my hands behind my back.

“So, you’re leaving?”

“Yeah. Our time is up here.”

She smiled a little. “Now, I don’t even know what to do with myself.”

“There were times I didn’t know what to do with myself either, but you’ll always find something.”

“Well, I guess that’s true.” Then she looked at me strangely. “What’s that behind your back?”

“Oh, just a little friendly gift I got for you.” And then I showed her. It was a pink notebook, and on the cover…in black ink was the name…Serenity’s Soul.

She slowly took it into her hands as if it were some fragile treasure, and then she looked at me. “My own story? You want me to tell my own story?”

“Only if you want to. Only when you’re ready. But if you do decide to tell your own story and discover your own self, you cannot lie. You can never lie to the pages of Serenity’s Soul because once you do, you’ve lied to yourself and lying will never help you to find the truth. This notebook will hold your most fragile emotions, and your most delicate secrets that can sometimes even frighten you. Within this notebook will dwell your memories and the record of your journey towards serenity. Once you start it, you must treasure it.”

She held it as if it were sacred to her and gently whispered. “I will. I really will.”

And then I heard my mother call for me. Landon had arrived.

I hugged Stacey. “Good-luck, Stacey.”

“Thank you, Monica. Same to you.”
As I walked out of her room, I saw Francis. I hugged her so tightly, I think she started to choke.

“I will never forget you, Francis. Never!”

“Well, that’s good to know, Sweety, because I will never forget you either. You will always have a home here.”

Then we smiled at each other, and I wiped away a tear as I picked up Mocha and walked outside where my mother and Landon were waiting.

“I think we have everything all packed up in the car. You and um,…your dog can sit in the back where there’s more room if you’d like.” Landon suggested.

“Sure.”

We all just looked at each other and took a deep breath. Our journey has started. We’re riding in Landon’s car, and at some point in time…we will reach our destination.

I’ll see you there.

Monica
